In Episode 116 of our RV travel series, we embarked on an unforgettable day trip to Fredericksburg, Texas, a charming town steeped in history and culture. Located just an hour’s drive from Inks Lake State Park, this destination is a treasure trove for history buffs, RV travelers, and day trippers alike. Our journey focused on exploring the National Museum of the Pacific War, a world-class institution that brings the stories of WWII to life.

Starting the Day in Fredericksburg

Our adventure began with a scenic autumn drive through the Texas Hill Country, which was alive with vibrant fall colors. Our first stop was the Fredericksburg Brewing Company, where we indulged in refreshing craft beer and creative dishes. This welcoming brewery offered the perfect combination of flavors and ambiance, fueling us up for the day ahead.

After our delicious meal, we took a short stroll to the National Museum of the Pacific War. For anyone interested in history, this museum is an absolute must-see. With exhibits spanning from the attack on Pearl Harbor to the Pacific front’s triumphs and tragedies, the museum immerses visitors in the powerful stories of WWII. The connection to Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, a Fredericksburg native, adds an even deeper layer of significance to this remarkable site.

Exploring the National Museum of the Pacific War

Walking through the museum, we were immediately struck by the depth and breadth of the exhibits. Restored artifacts, interactive displays, and authentic military equipment bring the history of the Pacific front to life. One of the most impressive pieces is a real PT boat, similar to the one my dad served on as a sonarman during the war. Seeing this restored vessel in person was a deeply moving experience for me, as it provided a tangible link to my dad’s service and the incredible bravery of those who fought in WWII.

My dad, who was just 18 on December 7, 1941, was horrified by the bombing of Pearl Harbor and felt compelled to enlist in the Navy as soon as he graduated from high school. He trained in Rhode Island and served on what he called a "sub-chaser," a small, fast boat tasked with dangerous decoy missions to protect larger ships. As a sonar operator, my dad played a critical role in detecting enemy submarines. While he often shared the lighter moments of his service, he never spoke of the war’s harsher realities.

The museum’s exhibits honor the sacrifices of service members like my dad, as well as those of my uncles who also served during WWII. My Uncle Bob enlisted in the Navy, while my Uncle Cass, a Marine and Sea-Bee, fought at Iwo Jima and was wounded in action. Seeing the exhibits and learning about the Pacific theater gave me a profound appreciation for their courage and service.

The Pacific Combat Zone

No visit to the National Museum of the Pacific War is complete without exploring the Pacific Combat Zone. Located just down the street from the main museum, this area features three incredible exhibits that provide a hands-on, immersive experience. Here, visitors can see a TBM Avenger torpedo bomber, the type flown by President George H.W. Bush during the war, as well as a later model PT boat similar to the one commanded by President John F. Kennedy.

The highlight of the Pacific Combat Zone is the outdoor living history reenactment area. This mock battlefield includes trenches, bunkers, and even knocked-out tanks. On select weekends throughout the year, reenactments bring the realities of WWII combat to life, offering an unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages. After hours of soaking in history, we wrapped up our day with some well-deserved treats: creamy Blue Bell ice cream and a leisurely stroll through Fredericksburg’s charming downtown.
