🌵 We Skipped Going Home and Found a Hidden Gem at Falcon State Park

One of the best things about RV life is the freedom to change plans — and sometimes those last-minute decisions turn into the most memorable experiences. That’s exactly what happened on this trip when we made the call to skip heading home and keep chasing warmer weather instead.

With a cold front moving into our home base bringing freezing temperatures, wind, and rain, staying put just didn’t sound very appealing. So instead, we checked the map, looked for availability, and decided to head south. That’s how we ended up at Falcon State Park, right along the Texas–Mexico border.

To be honest, this park wasn’t originally on our radar — but it quickly became a pleasant surprise. Not only did they have availability (which is rare during peak travel times in Texas), but the campsites were incredibly affordable at just $18 per night. Combined with the mild desert climate, it made for a perfect winter RV destination.

After arriving, we got set up — and like many state parks, our site wasn’t perfectly level. But that’s part of RV life, right? With a little adjusting and patience, we made it work and settled in for a relaxing stay.

The next couple of days were all about slowing down and enjoying the surroundings. We explored the park’s 2.6-mile loop trail, taking in the quiet beauty of the South Texas landscape. The weather couldn’t have been better — warm days, cool evenings, and plenty of sunshine.

One of the highlights of our stay was waking up to wildlife right outside our door. A group of javelinas wandered near our campsite, giving us a front-row seat to one of those unexpected RV moments you just can’t plan for. It’s experiences like that that make staying in nature so rewarding.

Of course, no extended stay would be complete without a quick supply run, so we took a little road trip to H-E-B to stock up. Back at camp, Mike kept things delicious with some amazing meals on the grill — from salmon burgers to barbecue shrimp and turkey burgers — proof that RV cooking can be just as enjoyable as being at home.

We even took a day trip to Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park, adding another layer of exploration to our extended adventure.

As the days went on, we rang in the New Year in a way that felt just right for us — relaxed, peaceful, and surrounded by nature.

This trip was a great reminder that sometimes the best plans are the ones you don’t make ahead of time. RV life gives you the flexibility to follow the weather, find hidden gems, and create experiences you might have otherwise missed.

And Falcon State Park? It’s definitely a place we’re glad we found.
