Travel days can often feel overwhelming for RV enthusiasts, but with proper planning and a few tried-and-true tips, you can transform them into smooth, enjoyable experiences. In Episode 118 of our RV travel series, we’re sharing our ultimate guide to stress-free travel days. From departing the beautiful Inks Lake State Park to arriving back at our RV home base, we cover everything you need to know to make your next RV travel day a breeze.

Morning Routines That Set the Tone

Our travel day began with Mike’s famous blueberry pancakes—a hearty and comforting breakfast to fuel us for the journey ahead. Starting your day with a delicious meal can help keep energy levels high and spirits positive. If you’re planning a travel day, consider prepping a favorite breakfast the night before to save time and ensure a stress-free morning.

After breakfast, we took one last hike around the serene trails of Inks Lake State Park. The peaceful scenery was the perfect way to bid farewell to this stunning Texas destination. Taking a moment to enjoy the surroundings before hitting the road is a great way to reduce stress and start your travel day on a positive note.

Packing and Prepping the RV

Packing and organizing your RV is one of the most critical steps to ensuring a smooth travel day. As we prepared for departure, I focused on securing all loose items inside the RV. We’ve learned the hard way that a moving RV—a.k.a. the "rolling earthquake"—can create chaos if things aren’t properly stowed. From kitchenware to electronics, everything was carefully packed to avoid damage or messes on the road.

To make sure we didn’t miss a step, we used Mike’s checklist app to verify every task was complete. Whether you use a physical list or a digital app, having a reliable checklist can prevent last-minute oversights. This is especially helpful for new RV travelers who are still getting used to the routine.

Tackling the Dreaded Dump Station

No RV travel day is complete without a stop at the dump station. While it’s not the most glamorous part of RV life, having a solid plan can make it quick and painless. We started by emptying our black tank, followed by the gray tank, and rinsing everything thoroughly. Pro tip (which my husband rarely does): Always wear gloves and keep cleaning supplies handy for any unexpected spills. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping this task stress-free.

Once our tanks were emptied and the RV was hitched up, we double-checked our connections and hit the road. Knowing that everything was secure gave us peace of mind as we began our journey.

Navigating Road Challenges

Driving through Austin’s infamous traffic and construction zones is a true test of patience. To stay calm and entertained, we shared fun memes and playlists to keep the mood light. Humor and good music are fantastic tools for managing the inevitable delays that come with RV travel.

If you know you’ll encounter challenging traffic, plan your route in advance and consider alternate roads when possible. Apps like Google Maps or Waze can provide real-time updates and help you avoid major delays. But we always link them to our RV friendly GPS so we don't get routed somewhere we can't go!

Arriving at our Home Base

After a four-hour drive, we finally arrived at our RV home base. The first step was unhitching the RV, which can be a bit tricky depending on the setup. Patience and teamwork are key to safely backing the RV into its site. Having clear communication and a set process for this task can save time and reduce frustration.

Once the RV was parked and leveled, it was time to reward ourselves. We treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at our favorite Mexican restaurant—a well-deserved treat after a long day on the road. Whether it’s a special meal or a relaxing evening at your destination, having something to look forward to can make your travel day feel like an accomplishment.
