After an unforgettable winter RV adventure in Galveston, Texas, it’s time to hit the road and head home! Travel days can often be the most stressful part of an RV trip, but with over 20 years of RV experience, we’ve fine-tuned the art of a smooth and stress-free travel day (well, most of the time!).
Whether you’re a full-time RVer, weekend camper, or planning your next state park getaway, these three essential RV travel tips will help you navigate travel days with ease. And don’t forget to stick around for a BONUS TIP at the end that has been a game-changer for keeping our travels enjoyable and burnout-free!
Starting the Day Right – A Galveston Sunrise Send-off
Before hitting the road, we woke up to a breathtaking sunrise over Galveston Bay—a perfect way to kick off our travel day! Taking a few moments to enjoy the peace and quiet before packing up always helps set a positive tone for the day ahead.
A few final moments on the beach, a hot cup of coffee, and a quick check on the RV travel route ensured we were ready to roll.
Tip #1: Plan Your Route & Check Road Conditions
One of the most overlooked parts of a stress-free travel day is route planning. While GPS apps are helpful, experienced RVers know that not all routes are RV-friendly.
Before leaving: ✔️ Check for low clearances, weight restrictions, and road closures ✔️ Use RV-specific navigation apps like RV Trip Wizard or CoPilot RV ✔️ Monitor weather conditions, especially during winter travel ✔️ Identify potential fuel stops and rest areas
For this trip, we planned a relaxed, scenic route with minimal traffic to avoid the stress of congested roads. Having a solid route plan always makes for a safer and smoother drive!
Tip #2: Pack Up & Perform a Pre-Trip RV Check
Packing up an RV campsite can be one of the trickiest parts of a travel day, but having a step-by-step departure checklist helps prevent mistakes.
Our RV departure routine includes: ✔️ Securing loose items inside to prevent shifting while driving ✔️ Checking tire pressure & fluid levels ✔️ Dumping tanks & refilling fresh water (if needed) ✔️ Stowing awnings, leveling blocks, and securing slides ✔️ Confirming all lights and signals work
Pro Tip: Always do a final walk-around before leaving. We once almost drove off with our leveling blocks still in place—a costly mistake to fix on the road!
Tip #3: Drive Smart & Take Breaks
A long drive doesn’t have to be exhausting if you pace yourself and take strategic breaks.
Here’s how we make RV travel days less stressful: ✔️ Stick to a comfortable driving speed ✔️ Take breaks every 2-3 hours to stretch, grab a snack, and let the dog out ✔️ Stay hydrated and energized with healthy road trip snacks ✔️ Avoid driving in heavy rain or high winds when possible ✔️ Follow the “3/300 rule”: No more than 300 miles per day or stop by 3 PM
On this trip, we made a pit stop for lunch, refueled at a truck-friendly gas station, and even let Enzo stretch his legs at a dog-friendly rest area. Taking your time and enjoying the journey is just as important as reaching your destination!
Bonus Tip: Avoid Post-Trip Burnout with a Smart Unpacking Routine & Dinner Out!
Once you arrive home, it’s tempting to unpack everything at once, but that can lead to burnout. Instead, we follow a low-stress post-trip routine: ✔️ Only unpack essentials first (food, laundry, electronics) ✔️ Leave deep cleaning for the next day ✔️ Check the RV for any maintenance needs before storing it ✔️ Restock must-have items so you’re ready for the next trip
By breaking tasks into manageable steps, we keep RV life fun instead of overwhelming. Trust us, having a well-rested day after travel makes a world of difference!
Final Thoughts – Making Every RV Travel Day Smoother!
After another amazing adventure in Galveston, we’re already planning our next RV trip. Travel days can be unpredictable, but by planning your route, packing up properly, and driving smart, you can make them as smooth and stress-free as possible.
