Sometimes the best RV trips are the simple ones — close to home, low on stress, and full of those little moments that remind you why you love this lifestyle. That’s exactly what this birthday getaway to Brazos Bend State Park turned out to be.

We planned a quick trip to celebrate Mike’s birthday with a relaxing weekend of camping, hiking, and just enjoying the outdoors. Of course, no RV trip ever starts exactly as planned. Our first stop was supposed to be a quick propane fill at Tractor Supply… except the hose was broken. Their temporary setup didn’t quite reach our motorhome, so that plan went out the window pretty quickly.

Luckily, we were able to fuel up down the road, and since Brazos Bend is only about an hour away, we still managed to arrive early — and even better, they let us check in ahead of schedule. That alone felt like a win!

On the way in, we took care of the essentials, including dumping tanks, and then headed to our campsite. To our surprise, we landed a freshly paved, perfectly level site — one of those rare RV moments where everything just works.

This trip also brought back memories of our first visit here years ago when we traveled with our horse trailer. It’s always interesting to return to a place and see it through a different lens, especially now in our motorhome.

With a full day to explore, we set out to revisit some of our favorite spots, including Hale Lake. This park is well known for its wildlife, and it did not disappoint. One of the highlights? Spotting the same massive alligator we saw five years ago — now estimated to be around 12 feet long and even given a name by the park rangers. Seeing a creature like that in the wild is always a little humbling… and definitely unforgettable.

We also finally got to visit the park’s nature center and gift shop, which had been closed during our last trip due to COVID. It was nice to experience that part of the park this time around and add a couple of small souvenirs to remember the trip.

The rest of the weekend was exactly what we hoped for — peaceful hikes, beautiful scenery, and time to slow down and enjoy the moment. And maybe the biggest surprise of all… nothing major went wrong. If you’ve followed our adventures for a while, you know that’s not always the case!

Before we knew it, it was time to pack up and head back home, wrapping up a short but memorable birthday trip.

Sometimes you don’t need to travel far or plan something elaborate to create meaningful experiences. A nearby state park, a little bit of nature, and a few unexpected moments can turn into the perfect getaway.

And this one? Definitely a birthday to remember.

Lovely freshly paved level sites with plenty of room. One of the many things we love about state parks.
