š Motorhome Mistakes Even Experienced RVers Still Make

Youād think after 20+ years of RVing, weād have it all figured out.
But our first long-distance trip in our motorhome proved otherwise.
What started as a simple plan ā a family wedding in New Jersey, Thanksgiving in South Carolina, and a two-week RV adventure ā quickly turned into a trip that completely reshaped how we travel today.
Because even seasoned RVers? We still make mistakes.
The 3 Biggest Mistakes We Made
Looking back, our biggest issue wasnāt the RV itself ā it was how we planned the trip.
1. Driving Days That Were Way Too Long We packed our schedule with ambitious travel days, thinking we could cover long distances without a problem. But driving a motorhome is a very different experience than towing or driving a car. By the end of each day, we were exhausted ā and thatās not how you want to feel on a trip thatās supposed to be enjoyable.
2. Not Building in Enough Rest Time We didnāt leave room to breathe. Every day had a destination, a timeline, or something we āneededā to do. When things didnāt go as planned ā like a last-minute cancellation from a Harvest Host stay ā it created unnecessary stress.
3. Trying to Do Too Much, Too Fast This was the big one. We tried to cover too many miles in too little time. Instead of enjoying the journey, we found ourselves rushing through it.
And then⦠reality hit.
When the Trip Got Real
From unexpected changes in our overnight plans to long, tiring drive days, the trip kept throwing curveballs. But the moment that really made us rethink everything was an accident along the way ā a reminder that fatigue and road conditions are nothing to take lightly.
That was a turning point.
It forced us to slow down, reassess, and start making better decisions for both safety and sanity.
What We Did Right (And Why It Mattered)
Not everything went wrong ā and one decision, in particular, made a huge difference.
Before the trip, we installed a Safe-T-Plus Steering Stabilizer. At the time, it felt like a ānice-to-haveā upgrade.
But once we were out on the road ā dealing with wind, road conditions, and long driving days ā it proved to be far more important than we ever expected. It gave us better control and stability, especially when conditions werenāt ideal.
That upgrade alone increased our confidence behind the wheel.
Lessons That Changed How We Travel
By the time we reached stops like Ocean Lakes Family CampgroundĀ and continued on to places like Biloxi, we had started adjusting our mindset.
We slowed down. We built in rest days. We stopped trying to ādo it all.ā
And the trip became something entirely different ā something better.
The Takeaway
This experience taught us that RV travel isnāt about how far you go ā itās about how you go.
Even experienced RVers can fall into the trap of overplanning and overdriving. But the best trips? They leave room for flexibility, rest, and the unexpected.
Because sometimes, the trips that challenge you the most⦠are the ones that teach you the most.
