Gorman Falls is gorgeous... even in the Fall when Texas didn't get a ton of rain!
Gorman Falls is gorgeous... even in the Fall when Texas didn't get a ton of rain!

Some hikes are beautiful. Others are challenging. And then there are hikes like the one to Gorman Falls — where you get a little bit of both… and then some.

During our stay at Inks Lake State Park, we decided to take a day trip over to Colorado Bend State Park, one of the most underrated destinations in the Texas Hill Country. Our mission for the day: hike the Gorman Falls Trail and finally see this much-talked-about waterfall for ourselves.

The trail to Gorman Falls is about a 3-mile round trip, and while that may not sound too intimidating, don’t let the distance fool you. The hike starts out fairly manageable, winding through scenic Hill Country terrain with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. But as you get closer to the falls, things begin to change.

The final descent is where this hike earns its reputation.

Steep, rocky, and narrow in spots, this section requires careful footing and a good grip on the railing. It’s definitely a “take your time” kind of moment — and if you’re not a fan of heights or uneven terrain, it can feel a little intimidating. But if you push through that last stretch, what’s waiting at the bottom is absolutely worth it.

Gorman Falls is a 70-foot spring-fed waterfall that feels almost out of place in Central Texas. Water cascades down moss-covered limestone, creating a lush, green oasis that’s unlike anything else in the area. It’s one of those places that makes you stop, take it all in, and just appreciate the beauty of nature.

After spending some time enjoying the falls (and catching our breath after that descent), we made the climb back up — which, yes, is just as challenging going the other direction! But there’s something satisfying about completing a hike that pushes you a little outside your comfort zone.

One thing to note: Colorado Bend State Park does not offer RV camping, which makes it a perfect day trip if you’re staying nearby, like we were at Inks Lake. It’s well worth the drive if you enjoy hiking, exploring, and discovering places that feel a little off the beaten path.

Before heading back, we made a quick stop at the park headquarters to stamp our Texas State Parks passport and pick up a couple of t-shirts — a fun little tradition we’ve come to enjoy on our travels.

This adventure may have been a short one, but it left a lasting impression. Between the rugged trail and the stunning reward at the end, Gorman Falls is a must-see for anyone looking to experience a different side of Texas.

And something tells us… we’ll definitely be back to explore even more of what this park has to offer.
