If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to camp inside the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” this adventure might just inspire your next trip. We recently spent four incredible days exploring Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and it quickly earned a top spot on our RV travel list.
Our journey began with the drive down into the canyon — and if you’ve never done that before, it’s an experience all on its own. Watching the landscape open up into towering red rock walls as you descend feels like entering a completely different world. Once we got settled into our campsite, we were ready to explore.
Sunday morning started early with a sunrise hike on the famous Lighthouse Trail. This is one of the most popular hikes in the park, and for good reason. The trail offers stunning views the entire way, but that final stretch? Let’s just say the last tenth of a mile is a climb you won’t forget anytime soon. It’s steep, a bit challenging, and absolutely worth it when you reach the iconic Lighthouse formation.
On Monday, we set out to explore more of the canyon, hiking the Juniper Loop and making our way to the Big Cave. This area offered a completely different perspective of the canyon, with unique rock formations and quieter trails that allowed us to really soak in the surroundings. It’s moments like these that remind us why we love RV travel — the ability to slow down and truly experience a place.
Tuesday was extra special as we celebrated our anniversary with a hike along the Cottonwood Trail. There’s something incredibly peaceful about being surrounded by nature on a day like that. No crowds, no rush — just the two of us, the trail, and the beauty of the canyon.
Of course, RV camping inside Palo Duro Canyon State Park comes with its own tips and considerations. From navigating the descent into the canyon to preparing for changing weather conditions, a little planning goes a long way. But the reward is waking up each day surrounded by some of the most breathtaking scenery Texas has to offer.
As our time in the canyon came to an end, we packed up with full hearts and plenty of memories, already looking ahead to our next stop — Lake Brownwood State Park.
If you’re looking for a destination that combines adventure, beauty, and unforgettable hiking, Palo Duro Canyon is a must-visit. Whether you’re traveling by RV or just planning a weekend getaway, this Texas gem truly delivers.
